“The Last Bastion” follows the forgotten battle automaton, Bastion, as it unexpectedly reactivates after laying dormant in the wilderness for over a decade. Fascinated by its unfamiliar surroundings, the curious omnic begins to investigate, but quickly discovers its core combat programming may have a different directive…
Ganymede isn’t the brains behind Bastion, he’s the heart of Bastion, a guiding force that helps him make moral choices, it’s shown in the short, Ganymede brings Bastion back to reality, back to “Himself”. But the real answer is yes, Ganymede was piloting Bastion all along!
It’s debatable Bastion was fully deactivated, if he was entirely deactivated then he’d have no way of ever becoming active again, I’d say instead he went into a deep hibernation.
Dragons is a personal favorite for many because the story is so compelling…. It’s certainly my personal favorite. However, many ways The Last Bastion can be seen as Blizzard’s best piece. The detail in the animation… each blade of grass, the way the shrubbery moves as Bastion wakes, the dust on the glass as he looks through his “eye”, the rain and water in Bastion’s palm… it’s simply breathtaking. The music so perfectly accompanies the piece and helps to move the story along by dictating what emotions the audience should feel. The empathy the audience builds as they relate to the very real and human reactions Bastion displays. I could go one but those are the most notable details.
The point is: there’s no reason you can’t acknowledge that The Last Bastion is in fact Blizzard’s best piece while having the opinion that Dragons speaks to you in such a way that it’s worthy of your favoritism.
I love this short so much. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the other animated shorts as well as the game, but this one stands out to me. It’s extremely well animated and is very atmospheric, and it even does well at adding a good internal conflict to a robotic war machine. It’s just… Really wonderful honestly. Just wanted to get that out.
Honestly I find that, out of most first person shooters I’ve played, Overwatch is one of the most light hearted, and yet there’s really screwed up and dark backstories to a lot of the characters! I love how Blizzard made such a good balance with it, like it’s not super dark and twisted, but it’s not super light and whimsical either.
They’re probably working on it right now. Since Junkrat’s PvE mode which had amazing reception, we’ve heard absolutely ZERO things about another PvE mode. That’s why i’ve been hyped since the release of Winter Wonderland – it confirmed my suspicion that they’re working on a big PvE style mode. You heard it here first! It’s going to be awesome.
I don’t think we can call it PTSD. He’s a robot built for combat. That being said, our deadly friend would, through his residual nature, perceive uncanny war-like sounds to be that of a threat.
